Kolkata: A revealing outfit worn by model Hemoshree Bhadra at a Durga Puja pandal has sparked significant outrage on social media. The crop top, which prominently displayed cleavage, was deemed inappropriate by many users who criticized the choice of attire for a religious celebration.
Hemoshree, who claims to be the winner of the Miss Kolkata 2016 title, shared photos on Instagram posing alongside two friends at the pandal. One friend wore a striking long black gown with a thigh-high slit, while another donned an orange minidress paired with knee-length boots. Social media users quickly condemned all three outfits as “indecent” and “vulgar,” accusing the women of disrespecting the sanctity of the occasion.
Sannati Mitra, a model-influencer who posted the picture, commented, “It was so rebellious, we never thought it was possible. Being a girl, we always knew our body is ‘BAD,’ but life is like that—it gives new examples and experiences [sic].”
The backlash intensified on social media platform X, where the images garnered tens of thousands of views. Critics voiced their disapproval, arguing that the women had turned a sacred celebration into a mere photo opportunity.
One user remarked, “Call me regressive but this is outright stupid.” Another added, “I know that everyone has a right to dress however they want, but isn’t it basic common sense to dress accordingly when visiting a temple?”
Some users expressed their discomfort, stating, “No matter how modern or open-minded you are, I don’t approve of clothing like this at sacred places like temples.”
There were also speculations about the authenticity of the photograph, with some questioning whether it had been edited. Others suggested implementing stricter rules regarding attire in pandals. “Initially I thought it was edited… but it seems to be real yet so unreal. How can they be allowed by committee?” one user asked.
As the debate continues, the incident raises questions about the intersection of modern fashion and traditional values during religious festivities.
