As Dussehra approaches, the Sri Ram Lila Society has proudly unveiled what it claims to be India’s tallest Ravan effigy, towering at an impressive 211 feet in Dwarka’s Sector 10. The massive structure, which took over four months to construct, is set to be the centerpiece of the upcoming festivities on October 12, 2024.
Rajesh Gehlot, Chairman of the organizing team, emphasized the significance of this year’s effigy, linking its height to the increasing societal sins. He stated, “As we can see, sin is increasing in society, so this effigy is depicting the increasing sins, and we will burn them all on Dussehra.” The burning of the effigy symbolizes the victory of good over evil, a core theme of the festival.
In a bid to make the event even more grand, the committee has conducted auditions for over 400 artists from across Delhi NCR to showcase fresh talent during the Ramleela celebrations. Gehlot mentioned that they have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders to attend the ceremony, expressing hope for a positive response.
This year’s Ramleela decorations draw inspiration from the ancient Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, with entry gates designed in the style of South Indian temples, known as “Gopuram.” Gehlot highlighted, “Our focus has been to present Ramleela in the most beautiful way possible, paying careful attention to the decorations and artist performances.”
Given the anticipated large crowds, security measures have been heightened for the event. More than 50 Delhi Police personnel, along with 200 volunteers and over 100 civil officers, will be deployed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
Dussehra, also known as Vijaya Dashami, marks Lord Ram’s victory over the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The burning of Ravan’s effigy, along with those of Kumbhkaran and Meghnath, is a widespread tradition across India, celebrating this victory.
This year, as the festivities unfold on October 12, vibrant celebrations are expected to resonate throughout the country.
