NEW DELHI – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm Rosh Hashanah greetings to his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and the global Jewish community on Wednesday, against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated, “Best wishes on Rosh Hashanah to my friend PM @netanyahu, the people of Israel and the Jewish community across the world. May the new year bring peace, hope and good health in everyone’s life. Shana Tova!”
The Indian Embassy in Israel joined in the celebrations, with officials raising a toast alongside Israeli friends to mark the Jewish New Year. The embassy shared on X, “On the eve of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish #NewYear, Embassy officials along with the Israeli friends raised a toast. Wishing you all Shana Tova U’Metuka!”
These greetings come at a time of heightened regional tensions. On September 30, Modi and Netanyahu engaged in a phone conversation to discuss recent developments in West Asia. During the call, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and emphasized the importance of de-escalation and the safe release of hostages.
The exchange occurs against the backdrop of ongoing conflict that began in October last year when Israel launched a counter-offensive against Hamas following a terrorist attack. More recently, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel, further intensifying the situation.
In response to the Iranian attack, Netanyahu described it as a “big mistake” and warned of potential consequences. The United States military coordinated closely with Israeli Defence Forces to intercept the incoming missiles.
Adding to the regional complexity, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have called for the immediate evacuation of civilians from several villages in southern Lebanon, citing Hezbollah’s activities in the area.
As the Jewish community worldwide celebrates Rosh Hashanah, which marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, these diplomatic exchanges underscore the intricate geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
The situation continues to evolve, with international leaders, including PM Modi, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the region.
